Mayrhofen Kainzenalm

Another new area for us to walk in, the Zillergrund. This is a valley that runs to the east of Mayrhofen. The forecast was not good, so we decided to do a low level walk. We took the bus from Mayrhofen, and alighted at "In der Au", a small guest house in the valley.

From In der Au 1265m, we crossed over the Ziller river and walked along a track up the Sundergrund. A couple of miles up the valley we reached the Kainzenalm, which was our objective for the day's walk. This is a lovely old alm, and when asked to see the menu the response from the old lady was Speck oder Kase Brot. Plenty of choice on drinks though. Dennis opted for ham and Jackie cheese, the food was simple but good quality and the enjoyable lunch washed down by some shandy (Radler). There was so much cheese that we saved some for the next day. For some reason there were lots of flies this day and when we tired of shooing them away, we started taking photos!

After lunch we wandered back down the track to In der Au, and then walked west along the Ziller river. Unfortunately it started to thunder and lighten, whuch then brought in very heavy rain. After an hour we reached the Gasthaus Hausling, who seemed not to mind that we were dripping, and we had some teas and shelter before getting the bus back to Mayrhofen.
