Mayrhofen Plauener Hutte

We returned to the Zillergrund, but this time stayed on the bus until the terminus at the Speicher Zillergrund reservoir. The bus journey takes an hour, and climbs 1200m. An additional toll is charged for the last part of the journey up from Barenbad.

From the Speicher Zillergrund (1850m) we walked through a service tunnel, and then alongside the reservoir, before ascending on the path to the Plauener hut 2364m. There are superb views along the way, and as it was great weather we took plenty (understatement!) of photos. The hut itself is in a superb setting, and we stopped awhile to have a couple of drinks.

Leaving the hut we took a contour path "Hannenmagweg" which goes over the border at the Holy Ghost pass. However we did not go that far, and took path 517 leading down into the valley Gruner Lahner. We walked down this valley to the southern end of the reservoir where we picked up the path to the dam and bus terminus at the northern end. We had tea at the Adlerblick (Eagles View) Cafe built on the cliffs above the reservoir before returning on the bus.

This is quite a challenging walk due to the terrain. We rushed (not wise) for the 4pm bus as Dennis was concerned that the last bus at 5pm might be full. We missed it by a few minutes, hence plenty of time for tea at the cafe. The 5pm bus had plenty of room. We would advise going for the fiirst bus up the valley.
