Mayrhofen Filzenkogel

A short walk today, we took the Ahornbahn to the top station. The Ahornbahn has the largest gondolas in Austria with room for 160 people. In bad weather they still run and convert the gondola into a cafe!

From the top station 1960m we walked across the Ahorn plateau to the Ahornsee then took the path climbing up to the Filzenkogel 2227m. The Filzenkogel is a very popular view point and there were plenty of people up there. Most people descend from there but the summit is on the end of a long ridge. We continued along the ridge for a short distance to a grassy top at c 2300m, returning from here back down to the Ahorn plateau.

We walked around the plateau on the panaroma path until we reached the display area for the birds of prey - Adlerbuhne. We got tickets for the display (7E per person) and thoroughly enjoyed it, we got chatting to Roy one of the chaps helping with the display , Roy was English and lives out in Mayrhofen.
