This walk was the most challenging of the holiday. The Ahornspitze is Mayrhofen's local peak towering above the village and it reaches an altitude just under 3000m. We took the Ahorn cable car to the top station. We got to the valley station at 8.15am and they started up an early service for the few walkers already there, this meant that we were walking by 8.30am.
From the Ahorn station you walk across the plateau and pick up a well trodden path to the Edel Hut, the path continues up from here and after a while traverses across a rocky slope to gain the ridge leading up to the summit. There is a bit of scrambling on the ridge, and there are a lot of loose rocks and stones around. The last section is a bit of a rock scramble which does have chains for protection. There is a cross on the summit and a summit book to sign. It is not a large area and was quite busy when we got there.
We retraced our steps to the Edel Hut, very popular but the drinks seemed expensive here. From here we made a detour of twenty minutes each way to a viewing point, on which was a memorial seat dedicated to an Englishman! Once back at the Edel Hut we returned to the Cable Car station for the trip back down to Mayrhofen.
