This is prehaps our most disappointing set of photos - one set of negatives has gone AWOL, and some of the pictures would not scan well, despite many attempts.

Our holiday

Neustift was our summer holiday destination in 1997.

It first year we had not stayed in a bed and breakfast. We had decided to treat ourselves to a four star hotel, the Landhaus Fankhauser, now renamed Hotel Bergjuwel. This was a very pleasant hotel, very well appointed, only been built a couple of years before our stay. Our room was very comfortable, with a sitting area. The hotel had a very nice dining room and lounge area, and a lovely swimming pool in the basement. Two menus were offered that changed daily a 'normal' menu, and a wholefood/vegetarian menu. Breakfast was buffet style with a good choice, and the evening meals were three courses plus a salad buffet. The food was very good, and we really enjoyed our meals. The hotel is situated on the edge of Neustift alongside the road to Fulpmes. The traffic was sometimes noisy as it accelerated away from the village, if you are a light sleeper ask consider asking for a room at the back of the hotel. Another hotel we heard people pass good remarks about was the Alpenschlossl.

Our holiday was arranged by Inghams. It is a popular resort, and is served by several operators. Alternatively you could make your own way by car, or fly to Innsbruck, and take the bus to Neustift (1 hour).

Neustift Village and Ameneties.

Neustift lies in the Stubaital. The Stubaital is a valley running south west, from Schonberg (at the Brenner End) to Ranalt. The largest village in the valley is Fulpmes.

Neustift has a fairly compact centre, and lies on the north side of the Reutzbach river. The tourist office is located in the centre, along with shops, banks and post office. Just outside the village centre is the Neustift leisure centre.

Transport

The Stubai valley is served by bus that runs through to Innsbruck. There is also the Stubaitalbahn which is a tram that runs between Fulpmes and Innsbruck. Information and timetables available at the tourist information offices, at the bus stops and at the stations of the Stubaitalbahn.

There are a four cable car/chair lifts in the Stubai valley that are open in Summer:

The Stubaital Card covers the buses in the Stubai Valley, the tram between Fulpmes and Innsbruck, the four cable cars mentioned above, the local swimming pools, and can be bought at the local tourist offices.

Walking

This summer map of the Stubai valley gives the layout of the area.

Surrounding the Stubai Valley are the Stubaier Alpen, the highest peak being the Zuckerhutl (3,505m). There are some areas that have similar rock to the Dolomites, and these have some Klettersteig (via ferrata) routes. An example of this is the Elferspitze, which overlooks Neustift.

There is a popular high level walk around the Stubai Valley. It is called the Stubai Hohenweg. The route links a number of the mountain huts into an 8 to 10 day walk.

We did not find the walking possibilities as extensive as other resorts we have visited, however there were sufficient options to keep us entertained for the fortnight. Neustift is a relatively low resort, with around 1,000m of ascent to reach the mountain huts.

We recommend the Kompass map 83 at scale 1:50000 for Stubaier Alpen Serleskamm - this will cover you for all of the walks. In Neustift you can buy a map Wanderparadies Stubaital (also from Kompass) at a scale of 1:30000.

There is a walking medal for Neustift. We achieved the silver medal which entailed bagging 8 of the mountain huts. To bag a bronze you visit a number of mountain alms. For gold, you have to climb six of the local peaks with a local mountain guide - so not cheap!

Elfer Hut

From Neustift we took path 5 to the Autenalm (1,658m) and on to the Elfer Hut (2,080m - stamping point). We had a drink at the hut and then walked down to the Elferlift station (1,784m) and through the forest to the Herzeben Alm (1,338m) in the Pinnistal. We returned to Neustift via Obergasse. It rained early on, but brightened up to give some good views.

Starkenburg Hut

From Neustift we took path 115 through the forest to the Starkenburg Hut (2,237m - stamping point). It was a hot day, so we took a drink outside the hut admiring the views. We walked down to the Kaserstallalm (1,884m) and the Knappenhutte (1830m) and then followed path 4 to Jedler - this wasn't too well waymarked especially towards the end. From Jedler we took the path to Rain, and on to Neustift. This was a good days walk with 1,300m of ascent, we were out for about 9 hours.

Hoher Burgstall (2611m)

This walk made use of the Schlick 2000 lift. We took the bus to Fulpmes, and walked up to the cable car station, which is at the top end of the village. We took the cable car to the top station - Kreuzjoch Bergstation (2,100m). From here we walked along to the cross on the Kreuzjoch, and continued along the panaroma path to Sennjoch, then through an area of avalanche barriers to the summit of Hoher Burgstall. We returned the same way making a small diversion to the top of Niederer Burgstall (circa 2,500m). Hoher Burgstall was the only peak that we climbed on this holiday.

Neue Regensburger Hut

This was a straightforward walk up to the hut. We took the bus to Waldcafe Knoblach (1,200m), then followed path 133 to Falbesoner Ochsenalm (1,822m), and on to the Neue Regensburger Hut (2,287m - stamping point). Dennis had some excellent cranberry pancakes here. We returned the same way. It was an overcast day so views were limited.

Oberbergtal

This was a 'low level' walk that we did because the weather was poor. From Neustift we walked path 3 past the outdoor swimming pool and on to the Kartnallhof (1,275m). We continued along a road past Forchach to Barenbad, and then took path 2 to the Alpenfrieden Gasthof (1,472m). We had a warming bowl of goulash soup here and then followed the river path down to Milders and then back to Neustift. The weather brightened up later in the afternoon to give some good views.

Innsbruck Hut

Starting from the Elfer Lift top station (1,794m) we walked Elfer Hut (2,080m). Then we followed the panarama path up to around 2,200m before descendending into the Pinnistal at the Karalm (1,747m). It was then onto the Innsbruck Hut (2,369m - stamping point). From the previous day's snow someone had built a snowman. The sun was now out and we enjoyed the views. We returned down the path to the Karlalm, and then down the Pinnistal to the Pinnisalm. We had planned to take the path from here back to the Elfer Lift, but missed the junction so we continued down the Pinnistal path to Neders, and then followed the path alongside the river back to Neustift.

Franz Senn Hut

An easy walk today, we took the private bus from Neustift to the Oberissalm. From Oberissalm (1,742m) we took the "Nature Path" to the Alpeinealm (milk stop) and on to the Franz Senn Hut (2,149m - stamping point). We ambled up the valley for about half an hour before returning to the hut for a drink. This is a large hut and very popular. We returned along the main path to the Oberissalm for the bus back to Neustift. There is a small kiosk in the centre of Neustift that sells the bus tickets and has details of the days and times it runs at.

Jochdole - Highest Cafe in Austria!

For this we had a lovely hot sunny day. A clear day is best for this outing, as you go up to 3,150m and views are super. Take the bus to the end of the valley at Mutterberg, the station for the Stubai Glacier Lift. Go to the top station - Bergstation Eisgrat (2,900m). From Eisgrat walk up the prepared (no need for crampons) path on the glacier to the cafe at Jochdole (3,150m) . There are excellent views of the Stubai and Otztal Alps. The cafe was a wooden chalet when we went, but has been replaced by a more modern construction. If you are inclined there is a peak, the Schaufelspitze (3,332m) which could be climbed from the cafe. We returned to Eisgrat and took the cable car down to the middle station near the Dresdner Hut (2,308m - stamping point). Finally we ambled to Mutterberg (1,721m) on path 135 over a small pass and down through the Wilde Grube valley.

Nurnberger Hut

We took the bus to Spitz. From Spitz (1,369m) we followed the forest tack to the Besuchalm and then took the path to the Nurnberger Hut (2,278m - stamping point). We returned the same way. There is a tiny church next to the Besuchalm which is worth a look inside.
Just have a couple of photos from end of walk.

Sulzenau Hut

We took the bus to the Sulzenau Hut Stop (1,600m) and then walked up to the Sulzenau Hut (2,191m - stamping point). At the hut we had a drink and sat in the sun as it was another hot day. Returning down the valley we stopped at the Sulzenau Alm for more cold drinks and views. This part of the valley is set in a bowl with an impressive wall of rock with a waterfall to the south. The alm is well worth a visit in its own right. The owner is a carver and seats & tables are carved in wood with some wonderfully grotesque figures. From the alm we returned the same way for the bus back to Neustift. We had bagged our last hut stamp for the silver walking medal, which we then bought from the tourist office in Neustift.

Pfarrachalm

Different scenery today, this walk was in the Fulpmes areas and afforded us with views of the Kalkkogel range of mountains which are more 'Dolomite' like and have a number of Via ferrata (Klettersteig) routes on them. We took the bus to Fulpmes, walked up to the Schlick 2000 valley station and took the cable car to the Froneben middle station. From Froneben (1,350m) we took the forest path towards the Schickler Alm. Just before the alm we left the main path for the Gloatsteig path. This led up to a viewing point Berglerbrundl (1,774m) before continuing through the forest to the Pfarrachalm (1,740m). We had something to eat and drink here before descending the path to Telfes (994m). This was the finish of the day's walking, we had a trip on the Stubaitalbahn from Telfes to Mutters and from Mutters to Fulpmes before catching the bus back to Neustift.

Maria Waldrast

Our last walking day of the holiday and another change of scenery, with a walk from Mieders. We took the bus to Mieders, then the Serles chairlift to the Koppeneck (1,605m). From here we walked down to the Ochsenhutte (1,582m) and then path through the forest climbing up to the Waldraster Jochl (1,878m) before descending to the Maria Waldrast (1,638m). This is a large convent which has a popular and large restaurant. We returned to Mieders (952m) via the Quellenweg to Sonnenstein.
