Today Jackie joined the majority of the party in an excursion to an area where we would be "guaranteed" to see some Griffin Vultures. These birds have a wingspan of more than 8 feet and talons to match - you would not want to meet one on a dark night!
Project Canyet has set up a reintroduction programme for the Griffon Vultures in an area of the Sierra Mariola Natural Park close to the town of Alcoy. Alcoy is about a twenty minute drive from Quatretondeta.
The walk started from close to the St Cristobel hermitage (as the vulture flies as we were at the bottom of a gorge and the hermitage is on a hill) which is just north west of Alcoy. The group followed the Ruta als Voltors with a couple of minor diversions. Everyone was very impressed with the views they got of the griffon vultures, and Jem managed to take some wonderful photographs.
The harder walk was to Mont Cabrer, a prominent mountain close to the town of Cocentaina, with a small party of just Dennis, Shamina and Donal. The walk started from Sant Cristofol, just outside Cocentaina. From here we followed the PRV 37 path, with a detour to see the very impressive ice house of Cava Arquejada. When we reached the summit of Mont Cabrer (1390m) we were rewarded with a Brocken Spectre. Leaving the summit we followed the PRV 37 down through the Barranc del Carrascalet to the Col d'en Sabata and then back to Cristofol. Unfortunately none of us had a camera with us so we have no pictures.
