Els Frares and Serrella (1359m)

This walk was up to the rocky pinnacles of "Els Frares" that the hotel was named after. From Quatretondeta we walked out along tracks, until a cairn marked a path across screes. This path rose gradually to start, but as we got closer to the pinnacles it started to get steeper in places. After admiring the various rocky pinnacles, one called the Siamese twins has since been nicknamed Monica and Bill, we climbed up steeply (through fierce vegetation) to gain the main ridge up, at a small summit called Penya Creus. From Penya Creus we continued along the main ridge to the summit of Serrella with its little wooden cabin. The descent was along a foresty track and then we followed a rocky ridge (sometimes narrow) to the top of Alt del Alt (1179m), enjoying the views. From here we descended a steep scree run (for an few hundred feet) to a pleasant path through a "hidden valley" to La Penya. Finally we picked up tracks and the road back to the hotel.

This was an excellent last walk for our very enjoyable holiday, and gave us opportunity to marvel at the rock formations that give Els Frares its name.
