Sasso Piatto (2958m)

Most of the peaks in the Sassolungo group are for climbers, or via ferrata exponents only. However one of the major peaks of the group Sasso Piatto has a path to the summit, although it is steep and rocky in parts.

This walk was probably the hardest of the holiday as it involved over 3500ft of climbing, and took us about seven and a half hours.

To start we travelled by Bus from Selva to the Passo sella. From Passo Sella we followed the Friedrich August Way, which passes by a few huts towards the Rifugio Sasso Piatto. Before reaching the hut we branched off on to a track which climbed through a meadow (good for Marmot spotting) before joining the main path, which led up to the summit of sasso Piatto.

sasso Piatto is another popular summit and towards the top where the routes joined there was a mixture of walkers, and climbers with their via ferrata gear.

We returned down the main track to the Rifugio sasso Piatto - unfortunately we didn't have time for a break here as we needed to reach to Mont Seura in tiime for the last chair lift. We made the chair lift with about twenty minutes to spare, to descend to St Christina for the bus back to Selva.

If doing this roue it would be wise to check operating times of the Mont Seura and Monte Pana chair lifts as they do change. If we had done the walk in our first week we would have had an extra hour to play with.
