Cirque de Barroude

The bus took us up to the ski station of Piau-Engaly (1877m) for the start of the walk. The weather wasn't very good to start, it was raining and there was low cloud. Fortunately the cloud lifted, and there were some good views later on. From Piau-Engaly we walked past the Moune Cabane, and contoured above the Badet lake, climbing up to the Hourquette de Chermentas (2439m). From the col the path dropped down to an area of scree.

We followed the path over the scree slope, and then we continued along to the Refuge de Barroude (2377m). The refuge is in a dramatic setting by the Barroude Lakes, with the high mountain wall of the cirque to the west.

As it was cooler today we were glad that the hut was open. The hut was only small, the beds fold up against the wall of the hut when not in use. From the hut we descended down the Gela valley to the road close to the "chapelle des templiers" at le Plan.
