Balcon de Pineta - Spain

You are at: Home > StLary walks > Balcon de Pineta

This was the last walk of the holiday. Maggie thought we should do a day's walk in Spain, as the HF brochure did mention possibility. This walk was done in preference to the Moudang Valley (a side valley off the main Aure valley). If you are like me and want to have a map of the area then the map you require is Editorial Alpina "Ordesa y Monte Perdido" at a scale of 1:40000. This can be brought in St Lary, or if you have the opportunity, in Spain where it is cheaper. The bus took us via the Bielsa Tunnel and from Bielsa to the end of the road in the Pineta valley. The road goes to a Parador, but we were dropped off at a large car park by the river.

From the car park (1275m) we walked along a track to El Felqueral before joining the path that criss crosses steep rocky terrain to reach the Balcon de Pineta. If you like your walks with fierce unrelenting ascent, then this is the one for you! It wasn't the one for a poorly Jackie - however she had decided to wait till lunch before turning back. But lunch was left to the top! A few people did turn back due to vertigo - the path was safe but exposed at times.

The Balcon de Pineta (2525m) is a high level plateau below the North East slopes of Monte Perdido one of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees. The views from here are excellent and again we were lucky with the weather.

It was 4000 ft of ascent (and knee crunching descent) on steep mountain paths. The descent was also a lot quicker than the ascent - we could sense the beer!
