Sunnegga and Leisee

You are at: Home > Zermatt walks > Sunnegga and Leisee

This was a good walk for our first day as it helped us to find our bearings. Access to this area can be gained directly from the Sunnegga lift, but we choose to do a circular walk from the hotel.

Just past the Beausite a road runs under the Gornergrat railway line, this leads up to paths into the woods. Walking up through the woods we reached Tufteren (2215m), where refreshments can be obtained. We then took a track south to Sunnegga (2288m).

Sunnegga is on a plateau below the Rothorn massif, and has with excellent views. This area is very popular and you will not be on your own in good weather. We descended to a small lake called the Leisee, which was popular with swimmers and sunbathers, then onto the farming hamlets of Eggen and Findeln. Findeln has a number of popular restaurants along its one and only street. Finally we descended to Winkelmatten and Schluhmatten, before returning to the hotel.
