Gornerschlucht, Schwarzsee and Zmutt

This was another circular walk from Zermatt, and was a bit harder and longer than the previous day. From the hotel we walked through the village, alongside the river. This led us to the Gornerschlucht, a gorge with a board walk through it. It is very spectacular and well worth the entrance. Unfortunately it does not seem a well frequented attraction. At the top end of the gorge walk you exit via a turnstile to then follow paths through the woods which bring you out on the Moos to Furi path.

Continue to Furi - this is a station on the Schwarzsee and Klein Matterhorn lift system. We continued up the paths to Hermmetje, and on to Schwarzsee (2583m). We had lunch by the lake which is another popular spot. There is a small chapel by the side of the lake. It is also the start of the path to the Hornli hut, where the climbers stay before the ascent of the Matterhorn.

From the Schwarzsee we took the long easy descent down the track to Stafelalp and Zmutt. Zmutt is another small hamlet where some of the houses are now cafes or restaurants. From here there is a well used path & track down to Zermatt.
