Klein Matterhorn (3883m)

This wasn't a walk but it is a very popular excursion which is highly recommended.

The gondola takes you from Zermatt to the top of the Klein Matterhorn. When you get out of the lift, walk down the exit tunnel and take a turning to your left which will lead you to the Gipfel (summit) lift. The lift takes you to the bottom of the steps for the viewing platform. Ascend the steps to the top, you are now on the summit of the Klein Matterhorn on the highest viewing platform in Europe. It was a very clear day with blue skies and we had magnificent views from the top. The views are very extensive, you can see Mont Blanc in the distance. You can also watch the guides taking groups of people to the top of the Breithorn and down. Although sunny it was cold, so wrap up well.

Whilst you are there it is worth walking out of the lift station and walking down the prepared snow slope to the Ice Grotto - there are some interesting ice formations here and a display about the mountain rescue service.

From ANO - view of Matterhorn from Trockener Steg From ANO - Gandegg Inn
We did the Kleine Materhorn as a chill day - on a warmer day an alternative would be a break at Trockener Steg station, with a visit to Gandegg Inn and either a return to the station, or a walk down to Zermatt.

An additional cable car route is now available with stop at Schwarz see i.e. Zermatt > Schawarz see > Trockener Stegg > Kleine Matterhorn

A tip is to check that the lift and the viewing platform are open - sometimes they are shut due to ice. Other tips are wait for a perfect day view wise, and do Kleine Matterhorn first as views & photos generally best earlier in day.
