| We took the Sunnegga express and then the Rothorn Cable
Car to Blauherd (2577m). From Blauherd, a path leads up to the Furggji Col (2981m), then you take the
'highest walking path in Europe' to the summit of the Oberrothorn (3415m). A number of points on the path
and the summit are marked by modern sculptures. We had excellent views as it was a sunny and clear day,
especially impressive were the views of the Mischabel range which includes the Dom, the highest mountain
entirely in Switzerland. (Monte Rosa is higher but is partly in Italy.)
From the Oberrothorn we returned to the Furggji Col, and then ascended the Unterrothorn (3103m), this is not particularly attractive as the path is up a ski piste, and there is the cable car station on the top. However just below the summit there is a very interesting collection of plaques; each plaque represents one of the local 4000m peaks, and contains a photograph of the peak and details of the first ascent. From the summit we descended the steep "Edelweiss" path to Blauherd, for the return journey to Zermatt. |
