Tasch via the Europaweg

You are at: Home > Zermatt walks > Tasch via the Europaweg

We had been to a choral concert in the square the previous evening with thunder and lightning accompanying the singing. The next day it was still raining - so we decided to do a walk along the Europaweg. This is a high level footpath that runs between Zermatt and Grachen on the eastern side of the Mattertal. It is about 35km long and there are a number of points that you can leave or join the path from the valley which makes it suitable for day walks. The valley is also served by the train so it is easy to do an A to B walk.

From the hotel we walked up to Tufteren again, but varied the route by taking the track via Ried. At Tufteren we joined the Europaweg and followed it north to Ottavan (Taschalp) and Taschgufer. The path stays at a altitude of around 2000m, the highest point we reached on this stretch was 2240m. This means that you are still within the treeline for a lot of the time, which affords some shelter from the rain. At Taschgufer we left the Europaweg and descended via forest track and road to the village of Tasch, where we caught the train back to Zermatt.
