Zmutt, Hubel and Trift Gorge

The rain had stopped, but it was cold and overcast. From the hotel we walked to the hamlet of Blatten and visted the Ricola herbgarden. It is only small, but has many examples of the different herbs together with information about their medicinal properties. We then took the path to Zum See and Zmutt, and onto Hubel and Alterhaupt with the intention of walking down to Zermatt.

Fortunately the weather had improved and so we walked up the very impressive Trift Gorge to the Trift Hotel (2327m). This is a very pleasant place to stop. It was a mountain hut that had fallen into disrepair which was then rescued by a young family. You can stay here as well, we spoke with some lads who were on a weekend trip from London, by train!

We had hot drinks and a very large piece of apple cake before walking down the Gorge path back to Zermatt.
