Portsmouth & District Hash House Harriers

Portsmouth and District Hash House Harriers meet every other Monday evening. The usual meeting place is outside or close to a pub in the Portsmouth and South Hampshire area. The exact location is given on a meetings sheet and has details of date, time grid reference and Hare (the person setting the trail). See below for details.

So What's it all about?

Hashing is all about following a trail laid down by a Hare, this usually consists of blobs of flour on the ground or the trunks of trees, spaced at about 20 - 30 yards apart.

Sounds simple doesn't it? Yes it would be until you find out that they are allowed to lay false trails (which hopefully catch out the faster runners) and the fact that sometimes they lead you a long way out then block the trail and send you all the way back to your last check point.

There are regroups from time to time to check that no one is lost (quite a regular occurrence) and to allow for the slower runners and "knitting circle" to catch up, occasionally there are refreshing regroups (beer stops) and always check points (plenty of options for choosing the wrong trail).

Eventually you will find the "On Inn" which as it suggests is usually back to the pub you started at. Once there you can usually expect to partake in the ritual of the "downs" to the accompaniment of some hearty if irreverent singing.

Many of the regulars are given particular "names" usually of a humorous/derisory nature for example "shit for brains", "iron balls" or "sunneyside up".
