Verdon Trail Race
Situated on the borders of the Provence and Var regions of Southern France, this trail race presents some very real physical and mental challenges set against a backdrop of some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. This years race was held over the first three days of July and covered almost 120km starting and finishing in the small picturesque mountain village of Aiguines and taking in a large section of the Grand Canyon of Verdon. Each day provided a new challenge, a varying distance and a whole lot of climbing; 6,000 meters of climb in total! And almost all of it on mountain tracks and trails.
Registration took place on Wednesday 30th June, all relevant race documents were checked, including medical certificate and cardiograph, we were given our race packs and for the first time saw the course maps. Clearly what lay ahead was a serious three days running (and rather a lot of walking!!). Later in the day all the competitors, French, German, Italian and a handful of British entrants, gathered for a race briefing and welcome meal in one of the race tents close to the main camp site. After that it was prepare for the off and heads down.
