Introduction

Welcome to Biddulph OnLine

Biddulph is a small town in North Staffordshire England. It has a population of about 25,000. It lies in a valley some 7 miles north of the City of Stoke on Trent.

The main employment used to be coal mining, however that has now ceased. The town took it's name from mining (By Delf) meaning( by the diggings), the spelling has changed many times over the last 1,000 years, so has the pronunciation, many local people still pronounce it as Biddle.

If your family name is Biddulph then your name is derived from Biddulph, however if your family name is Biddle your name could also have been derived from Biddulph, the name "Biddle" is recorded as far back as the 1470s in Local Parish registers.

Biddulph is now mainly a residential area with little local industry, there is a mill that makes ribbon and the hook and eye fastener Velcro® used to fasten the spacesuits of the Astronauts who landed on the moon.
