Sir John Gell 1593 - 1671
Sir John Gell of Hopton, Derbyshire controlled Parliamentarian forces in Derbyshire. He also assisted in many skirmishes in Staffordshire and other Midland counties during the English Civil War.

He was involved in the siege and subsequent capture of Lichfield in 1643. He owned lead mines in the High peak area and served as high Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1635. It is believed under his orders, a troop of Sir John's men went to arrest Christopher Fulwood at  Middleton (Fulwood) Castle. In the process Christopher tried to escape but was shot and fatally wounded.

John Fullwood of Birmingham - Artist  1854?-1910
John Fullwood worked in the West Midlands during the last quarter of the 19th century. He not only had an address in Broad Street Birmingham, but also had one in Twickenham London. Some of  John's work is for sale at this web site.

As a professional artist he regarded the great London exhibitions as most important for his career. However, the Midlands was his main work place and between 1874 and 1900 he exhibited no fewer than 67 paintings at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists exhibitions. By 1900 John had moved to Sussex where he continued working for about another 10 years.

John published in 1880 a set of etchings that were and originally bound as a volume called "Remnants of old Wolverhampton and its environs". Although some of its views show other towns and villages the bulk are in Wolverhampton.

Samuel Fullwood - London 1695
Samuel was Master of the Company of Makers of Playing Cards in 1695 and 1696. His business was located at the Knave of Clubs, in Paternoster Row, Spittlefields, London.
