I'd long since filed to the back of my mind. Some of the comments regarding past

Enjoy the website.Surprised that some people
hated their time at salvo so much.My recollections are generally happy.Surprised
also that people can recall such detail. Its 25 years since I left and I can recall
very little, Im struggling to recall some of the teachers.I remember Mickie Campbells
Physics is fun T shirt ( and the sweaty stain when he lifted his arms), Genders
was my favourite teacher as to a fifteen year old he was quite funny; Its a bit sad
he was still there in 2000.Wasnt too keen on Besser and Grogan butas I was crap
at Chemistry this probably had something to do with it.Monty was respected, firm
but fair and all that and I had Fr Eric as Form Teacher in the third year and cannot
recall any violence from him.Does anyone remember Stephen Shales from my year?He

Travel to school on steam train from Watford
Junction and bus or walk. Wednesday cricket at Moat Farm. Latin, but no science.
Great friends, all lost at this time. Doodle bugs forced us in to the shelter on
many occasions, but generally I can never remember being late, even with the long
journey. Had a good friend in Kings Langley, I think his name was Mawe. Also son

"Time it was and what a time it was - it was ..."
Well, that's how Simon ad Garfunkel put it in BOOKENDS, and I'm sure Bob Knowles
and I sang it at least once in the upstairs room of a pub in Harrow somewhere, with
or without Julia Peirano and Denise Wood from the Sacred Heart, with the echo of
Jimmi Hendrix still throbbing in the large cupboard at the front of the class that
passed for a lower sixth common room, where Arts versus Science lines were being
drawn through the qualms of 60's fag smoke that billowed out into the English lessons,
and where you couldn't like The Stones and The Beatles equally - you had to express
a preference - nor could you embrace Reggae and sign up for the minibus trip to
La Traviata - but we did, and when the Sacred Heart girls first came over to study
Economics (so they could s

George Crawford would be amazed that I managed
to teach English in Central Scotland for 25 years. I married a Glaswegian in 1976,
have a son of 22 (!) and very little hair. I went to Stitling University 1970-5,
the IRA tried to blow me up, and I can speak French but good... My wife (Joyce)
works at Stirling Castle and I@m at a local hotel most nights. And yes, my jokes
have not improved. And yes, I'm happy. Feel free to email me if you remember me

has disappeared - a more civilised world today. At the same time, I'm grateful for
all the creativity there was at the Salvatorian ( drama productions, music, art,
literature.)Thanks for an excellent website;clearly, a labour of love!

I notice there are plenty of posts from people
who went Salvo in the 50s/60s/70s and from people that are still there now, but
none from my time.Actually I can see why. I am getting a sickly feeling posting
this one. Do I realy want those memories flooding back?Oh but we had some laughs
though didn't we? looking up Miss Pyrke's skirt, getting belted around the head
with a book from Mr Raleigh, being up for the Loon of the Year award from Mr ruanne,
learning how to draw a clown's face from Mr Davies, whistling the theme from Bod
to Mr Hogarth. Actually. It was shit. Jumpers for goalpost? Hmm?I loved it and I
hated it. Hated that it was sometimes a vicious place. Loved the humour sometimes,
and I learnt to play Caroom in Bayross's geography room.

I look back at my schooldays fondly, but at the
time had my share of cannings. had some great friends, Barry Cummings,Gerry Maguire,
Andy Harrington, leslie Crowhurst, michael Thorpe and others.Discipline was high
on the agenda, but if you broke the rules and got caught.........as the saying goes
if you cant do the time, dont do the crime. There was a great maths teacher called
Paddy Hartin, Father Peter was evil if crossed, found him one night sitting on the
pavement drunk.Father Thomas was headmaster, mysteriously dissapeared, never to
surface again, a music teacher we called Bomb, mr. Baker the PE teacher, also very
strange. Many memories, would be great to meet old friends.

I am amazed that Colin Tufnell still seems
to be there. Makes me feel quite young. Many of the older people there in the '60s
were a tad dysfunctional. I quite admired (in an odd sort of way) their attempts
to stay on the rails. But that was an unintended education in itself.

Great school really enjoyed the sport but the
academic stuff I wasn't ready for. Hence having to go back and study in later life
to get my O, A levels & degree etc. I hope I still hold the high jump record? I
never did break 2 metres when at Salvo. Anyone recall Doc Lewis, Granny Gratton
and Jarcy, Bill Genders, Montgomery? All great teachers in their own way hmm? Those
were the days when we had zero responsibility. I'd love to attend a reunion as it
will be 20 years since I left in 2006. I still speak to Matt Gagliardi but that's
really the only one and sometimes get e-mails from Stefano D'angiola. Would be good
to know how Wycombe, Clifford et al are doing. It would be great to meet former
school mates at some point but who knows when??

I have no links with Salvatorian College as I
went to Woolverstone Hall Grammar School for Boys, Nr. Ipswich, Suffolk but there
is a connection - Dr. H C Lewis, who was a master at both schools (WH in the ‘50s
and SC in the ‘60s & ‘70s). He was assistant house master of the house I was in
at WH and it would seem that his fearsome reputation travelled with him to SC. I
can remember him carrying (what seemed like) a size 11 plimsole (remember them)
in the inside pocket of his jacket which to administer punishment for some slight
misdemeanour. I can also remember him telling tales of flying Lancasters on bombing
raids over Germany during classes.I can’t remember when he left WH, I think it would
have been about 1959; did he join SC then or go somewhere else in between? There
are some loose references on your site that indicate that he was in a wheelchair,
is that the case? He certainly wasn’t when he was at WH.I would be interested if
anyone can fill in some of the missing details.

I have to admit to hating Salvo, almost every
last minute of it. The teachers were in the main cruel and vicious and in a way
that would now mean prison. Geography with Baros wasn't too bad although he once
beat the living daylights out of me for something I had nothing to do with. He also
took great relish in splitting a slipper open on my hand for some other minor misdemeanor.
However, he did run a good bridge club. Doc was a swine and a bully; he taught me
to hate maths until a few years ago. Who remembers 'sex' lessons given by Father
Something. Being told about sex by a priest? Surreal. During my time Father Dominic
Headmaster and Monty was Deputy Head. I got asked to leave school in the end. Never
really understood why, but that was my best day at the place. Living in London I

have to just say what a wonderful form tutor I have called Miss Bidmead, a great
English teacher I have called Mrs Baker and such an excellent German teacher called

who is still currently in the school and (H.O.D) is Mrs O'Donoghue. I would also
like to make a small little comment for 7GB. I hope we win that form plaque 7FM

thoughts and memories that i hold for salvo and my time there. i was in 11F when
i left in 2001 and i started in 1997. Mrs Hildrew was my form tutor and although,
at points i hated my time at salvo, some memories were good. mainly those of the
PE dept. lost my plot now but salvo left a lot to be desired. i would never send
my kids there. i had a great 2 years after salvo studying a-levels met some DECENT
people and my girlfriend of 1 year. now at uni and never look back at what was 5
dissapointing years.

what a nostalgia trip thanks for a great website.memories
of salvo are of repression and fear, the worst possible enviroment to educate and
cultivate youth.I felt my time there was a complete waste and itleft me with a deep
resentment of catholisism and hopelessly unprepared to deal with life in the real
world.

Found the site by accident and it ressurected
many unhappy memories.Fr Louis, Doc and Monty were all evil bastards.I recall being
caned by Mr. Henry and on returning the cane to Wonderboy being given six on the
backside because I did not appear sufficiently distressed.Doc used a fellow classmate
clothed in swimming trunks to model in his physiology class. How naive some of us
where!

Just recently revisited UK and took a trip to Kinsale. Brought back memories of a trip there in around '52 with Fr Peter. Even found the field in which we camped, beside the church. Visited the old School when in Harrow, but it was school holidays.

Put in a posting a bit back, but I've enjoyed reading some of the recent ones. Interesting to see the old school cap on the site. I burned mine, once I had tipped out all the tobacco from the fags I hid in it. I wonder if anyone else remembers a smallish 1st year being hung out a window by Fr Dominic (who was wrestler and chef early in life) because he hadn't done his "Civis Romanus " translation. All good fun, of course. Will look back in again soon. JIm

I'm not an Old Salvatorian myself, but I did attend Saint Dominic's Sixth Form College up on the Hill so I once knew many Old Salvos and Sacred Hearts. And, although I've now forgotten all the details, I recall listening to many tales regarding the infamous Neville Bayross! ... I stumbled on your site whilst searching for similar sites connected to Saint Dom's. Sadly, I can't see any messages on your message board from any of my Old Salvo friends, but I wanted to post a message of my own just in case any of them happen to pass by.
I've set up a website relating to Saint Dom's which might be of interest, you can find it at:

So far I have just completed year 10 at Salvo and I am on my summer holidays. During my four years of study, the school has been great to me and the teachers are brill (as they all push us to the limit in achieving good exam results), Also when I was in Year 9 I took my German GCSE 2 Years early and I got a Grade B. Which was excellent. After completing this I am now doing As Level German as well as retaking my GCSE. Furthermore I have just completed my first year of my GCSE course- which meant doing coursework for all of my subjects. This SUCKED BIG TIME!!! I also did Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics for AS level which on top of the coursework was really stressful However I have now done my RS exam and I have finished all of my coursework, meaning I have more time to do revision next year then to

Five great years. Enjoyed every minute of it. Used to travel in from Putney every day with Twitch (Morgan) so no wonder Latin was my best subject. Met up with Albert Welling a few years back and also John O'Neill. Great to see them both. Just stopped smoking - 50 a day for 38 years - thanks Albert for giving me my first fag all those years ago! I know that looking back some of the teachers were quite spiteful - Doc Lewis for example, and if Bruv got hold of you you knew about it, and Pug lifting you off the floor by your sideburns (God that hurt!) but it went with the territory and It's a shame to see so much vitriol against them all on this site. I remember once the whole class being given 30 lines. We all laughed until he (Noddy? Norville?) wrote it on the board. I still remember it nearly 40 years later. I

Let's try again. It went as follows: - "The conglomeration of a number of people vociferously creating an unsonorous noise inevitable produces the sort of tintinnabulation which earns lines as stupid and meaningless as this one." Jesus, in our schoolboy handwriting just writing it out once nearly filled a whole page! Shame to see that Dodo has shufled off this mortal coil.

Reading the various comments I wonder if I went to the same school or was it a different planet.Intrigued by some but disagree with a lot of others.Noticed that Geoffrey Shovelton (the only sane one)is enjoying a late career singing Gilbert & Sullivan in America. As for most other teachers I knew and a few colleagues as they have departed the least said. However if any Old Salvatorian is brave enough to cross into 'hostile territory' a warm Scottish welcome is awaiting!

i received the cane+slipper 4 smok ing, bunking off p.e.,and 4 got hom ework on many occasions. in my opinion the use of slipper, gymshoe and cane should still b in use on pupils who regularly disobey the school rules. any pupils caught smoking at salvos when i was there was told 2 change into sports kit,and rep ort 2 the headmasters office 2 rec eive yor punishment, which was either a slippering,or caning. i now run my own private academy in old amersham, namely called "REDSEAT COLLEGE". I cater 4 these pupils=males and females 16-35,who have left school who have forgotten how 2 behave in 2 days society. if you want an appointment in my office, please ring 07806-533897, and i will happily oblige. smoking, drinking, bad sports resul ts,late 4 work,to name just a few, i'm your man. do not send Sir

Intresting Webiste I find it quite strange alot of things which can be deemed unacceptable have happened at Salvatorian College. Smoking with teachers ,Cannings and all the rest. Alot of bad things happen at Salvatorian but not investigated. A School of deep secrets I would suggest. Reading some of the other peoples experiances I can see alot of people smoke during school time. I can only ask HOW?? I find it virtually impossible I guess its the trend at the time. Its impossible to smoke at school because enevitably someone who see's you will inform a teacher. Very few people smoke its a pile of crap in the end of the day only if My life was as crystal clear as a diamond I wouldnt have to smoke to try and search for deeper meaning or for some kind of gain. I guess thats the reason I smoke. Salvo gives me too m

Salvo gives me too much Stress I cant even start with the amount of crap that goes on even today. I must comment on some teachers for everyone's satisfaction. Miss Walton the best english teacher in the world without a doubt. Extremly Clever and I learnt alot from her shame I don't have her anymore. As you can see I have extremly poor grammer skills, now that shes not my teacher anymore. Mr Foley Deputy head , possibly one of the best role models of a man in todays world. Although your either in his good books or bad books. Good thing is you can earn your respect with him. He is not as judge mental as he looks. Miss Bidmead on the other hand an extremly clever yet wity women, My form tutor you see you can't go wrong with her. Just don't step out of line and she wont kill you. Step out of line with her then your just asking for it. Possibly the only time I started behaving myself was when I went to salvo.I was a huge devil back in primary a teacher shouting didnt affect me back then,Now it does. Overall I enjoy Salvo yet envy some of the time due to uneducated and unprofesional teachers. Oh and before I forget I hate PE I HATE IT!!! Especially RUGBY.

Still occasionally have a pint with JD of the piss, gob and pubes fame.(Never leave my pint unattended, though). My lasting memories of those days are going home with lumps on my head from "Bruv" and his evil accuracy with a monster bunch of keys. Paddy Hartin standing behind me in maths and making sure both my ears were cauliflowered and ringing equally! He did like balance in his equations. I think my favourite teacher was Mr. Davis (Art).I was thrown out of English Lit. and used to spend my spare time in the art room, learning the benefits of fag ash in the grey paint mix for a silver effect. I think I quite respected George Crawford, purely because 1) as soon as Wimbledon came around, one mention of tennis and that was the English lesson fu**ed! and 2) He caught me smoking in and out of school without onc

I mostly liked the Salvatorian. It was small and there was a genuine pastoral interest in the children. We were given a strict talking to in our first year by George Crawford about the school's not tolerating bullying, and a few years later a boy was thrown out following a racist incident. This made the environment safe and mostly kindly if eccentric and populated by several dysfunctional types.A modern education would have driven me mad and let me down badly.
