The legacy of both Beethoven’s music and his personality were keenly felt by every composer who succeeded him, especially anyone who was trying to continue the Austro-German tradition of composition. Of all Beethoven`s successors Brahms seems to have been more affected by his shadow than most, despite being recognised as a genius early in his career by most of his contemporaries. We shall be exploring this relationship, suggesting how Brahms eventually overcame this problem, while never ceasing to demonstrate his own individuality. Great works by both composers will be featured, while we shall also be surveying German music in general during the 19th century.
