From Psalmody to Sondheim-The Sounds of A Great Continent
The history of American Music is comparatively short but full of excitement and interest. All aspects will be covered from Psalmody to Broadway Shows and will include Jazz and the influence of the European tradition. American Music is a comparatively recent phenomenon, but during the last two hundred years its history has been fascinating. Almost totally influenced by European cultural mores during the 19th century, in more recent times the emergence of major homegrown composers including Ives, Barber and Copland has redefined is relationship with the classical tradition. At the same time we have witnessed the emergence of jazz and the American musical as genres that have taken on and conquered the world. Music from all these genres will feature in abundance in what promises to be a fascinating and informative survey.
