We will consider the Treasurers position at the next meeting which will be January/February

Regarding the merger; there had been a meeting of the both unions to consider the Instrument of amalgamation in light of feed back from members. Several important changes had been made in relation to equalities and democratic structure. They are all positive. This was reported to the NEC on Wednesday.

During Saturdays meeting Gillard's crew raised many objections some of them based on real issues, but many of them based on misinterpretation of the existing Instrument. They individually stated these issues as the reason why they would vote against the merger. All of this was in line with the Gillard analysis that you had passed on to me and I had passed onto Derek. Derek sat through it patiently and then addressed each issue by explaining that the new instrument resolved it or that the original instrument was being misinterpreted. He then addressed each dissenter in turn and said words to the effect of 'now I have resolved the reason for you voting against: will you now support the merger'. They all declined in turn!

Whilst Derek may have set them up by not reporting the changes or correct interpretation until after they had all spoken, the situation was compounded by the fact that Gill George had obviously not told the London delegates about the changes to the Instrument. It was quite an entertaining spectacle!
