MEMORANDUM

General Secretary’s Office

To                    All Amicus Officers and Staff

From                Derek Simpson, General Secretary

Subject            Roger Lyons

Our Ref

Date                 26 May 2004

With this memorandum I have enclosed a copy of a letter sent today to all members of the Amicus National Executive Council regarding the status of Roger Lyons.

You will see that as a result of a decision of the Certification Officer for Trade Unions in response to a complaint made, Amicus was informed that Roger could no longer hold the position of Joint General Secretary and as such Roger is no longer Joint General Secretary. The NEC’s General Purposes & Finance Committee decided not to recommend to the NEC that they appeal this decision (although ultimately this will be a decision for the NEC).

There are implications for Amicus employees in this ruling and for legal reasons these must be adhered to strictly. As of today there will be no reference to Amicus ‘Joint’ General Secretaries. References to Roger as General Secretary must be removed from Amicus letterheads and memos, and all headed notepaper must be discarded that makes reference to Roger Lyons as General Secretary or to myself as Joint General Secretary.

These conditions may seem drastic in respect of a colleague who has worked with the union for almost 40 years. However we must demonstrate that we are following the CO’s decision to the letter and I therefore expect all colleagues to follow these instructions. You will note from the attached letter that we are continuing to support Roger in his role as President of the TUC, in the same way as we would for any ordinary member.
