What is a ‘lay’ member?

Lay members in a trade union are members who do work for the union because they believe in it. Lay members, as opposed to Full Time Officers, are not paid for their efforts. Strictly speaking members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), the ruling body of the union, are lay members. However these people do get paid expenses, which are not disclosed but can be estimated from the accounts.  For example in Amicus MSF the declared costs of the NEC are £250,000 a year, with 36 NEC members this means an average of £7,000 each.  Some MSF NEC members claim nothing, some considerably more than this average, for a few days work a year.
