T-U-C NEWS
Further evidence of the extent to which Britain’s trades union movement has
been “modernised” was supplied by T-U-C general secretary John Monks
during a recent dinner at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane to mark the fist 150
years of engineering and electrical trade union, A E E U.
Barely a murmur met Monk’s opening remarks:
“ My Lords, Colleagues, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen…” Perhaps he had
meant to say “ Brothers and Sisters,” but thought twice of it having spotted
where the union’s top brass, both current and former, were all sitting. Their
number included current general secretary, Sir Ken Jackson, and ermine be-
decked former general secretaries and presidents, Lord [Frank] Chapple,
Lord [Hugh] Scanlon, Lord [Bill] Jordan, Sir [Gavin] Laird and former steel
union boss, Lord Brookman.
No 1029 JUNE 1-14th.
Despite being pursued through St Helens by a Daily Mail- sponsored butler
bearing a silver tray replete with champagne flutes, the distinctly plebeian
Shaun Woodward has joined the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical
Union.
While Woodward would be the last to admit not knowing the difference
between a lathe and a lawnmower, some AEEU members are furious
that Shaun’s application was waved through in days so the way was clear
for the union’s general secretary, Sir Ken Jackson, to direct delegates in
St Helens Labour party to vote for him.
Traditionally AEEU members must serve an apprenticeship up of up to
seven year before they may be considered worthy of seeking their union’s
nomination for parliament. But for Shaun it all took place in well under
seven days.
NICE ONE SIR KEN
