Another excellent turnout of 18 Solos launched themselves into the final event of the 2005 travellers series at Loch Earn. This was no inland waterway drift! With a strong North Westerly forecast the weather gods obliged with a force 4 coming straight down the full length of the loch with frequent force 6 squalls arriving with 20degree shifts either way, adding angry white horses to the already choppy water.
Kevan Gibb needed at least a 1, 3 or 2, 2 at this event to win the travellers series outright from Jim Sinclair who was not at Loch Earn. In race1 Gibb had to work hard to win from Craig Moffett and Ali Gordon always in contention. Ali Gordon won race2 with Ricard Bolton second, (having made a remarkable recovery from falling out of his boat just after the start without capsizing!) and Keith Milroy was a strong third. So going into the last race the travellers series was still undecided. In race3 Gordon, Bolton and Gibb led the fleet (in that order) until half way through the last lap when Gordon capsized and Gibb came through to win, followed by Bolton and Gordon.
A most exciting and enjoyable event, very well run with rescue crews kept busy doing a great job, and a good way to round off a very successful Scottish Solo season.
1st Kevan Gibb, LBSC;
2nd Ali Gordon, CCC(Bardowie);
3rd Richard Bolton, ELYC.
