Wormit Traveller 27-May-2006

Wormit boating club held the first solo travellers of the season, and with a forecast for lots of wind, perhaps this reduced numbers. Ten competitors competed in a good force five running against an unusually strong tide resulting in large short steep waves, which proved difficult for all competitors resulting in lots of retirals from race one. Robbie Wilson led round the first mark, and managed to stay upright until the first gybe, leaving Kevan Gibb to nip in front. Robbie managed to get back in touch with Kevan by the next downwind leg, and this time kept it upright and win the first race from Kevan, these were the only finishers, with busy rescue crews helping the other boats.

After a short break, the sun came out, and the wind died to a four 4, giving great conditions for everyone to enjoy a good sail. Kevan Gibb led at the first mark, with Robbie in second and Derek Gibb in third. Robbie, with better downwind speed managed to get past Kevan and develop a good margin by the end of the race, with Kevan in second, comfortable in front of younger brother Derek, Nigel Orkney in 4th and Keith Milroy not far behind in 5th. Everyone throughout fleet with everyone finishingseemed to get a good race in the excellent conditions.

Everyone was a bit weary after two hard races. A reduced fleet started the third race, now having to change and tack up the wormit shore against the strong tide in an increasing breeze of F5 again. Robbie Wilson led at the first mark, with Derek and Kevan close behind. Robbie pulled away on the downwind leg until another impromptu capsize at the gybe mark and more polishing of the hull, let Derek and Kevan thro, they carried on there brotherly battle, with Robbie managing to catch up and take and gain the lead again going into the last beat. After another close tacking match up the shore , with Derek picking the shifts and keeping out of the tide best sneeked into the lead, and Kevan also passing Robbie, with only 13 seconds separating the first three boats. Barrie McLean sailed a great race in an old boat no 1645 to come in fourth, with Nigel Orkney not far behind in fifth.

With two firsts, Robbie won his home club event, Derek came in second after winning the last race, and Kevan in third, Nigel sneaked fourth by one point from Barrie McLean.

Thanks to Wormit for putting on a good event in windy and testing conditions.
