DUNDEE LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!
PEG & THE BOUFFANTS - Dexters 23-10-08
Interetingly, they were the only band on tonight - by design!! Turns out that Dexters have started up what they're calling a "Thursday Club" and doing free gigs on a Thursday with just one band and a DJ, so it should be interesting seeing if the thing starts to get an audience. First band to be experimented on were Peg & The Bouffants and so it was that they took the stage around 10.30 to a decent-ish crwod in terms of numbers (well, it was the first event)and let loose
First thing I noticed is that Kirsty's grown her hair again - now I know this sounds awfully superficial a thing to say, but in a band where the two female singers are also the central visual atraction, somethinglike this, does count. Anyway, throughout the set, she looked more confident than I'd seen her to date, providing both an attention-grabbing stage presence as well as her interaction with Janine. Janine, of cousre, still comes across as this commanding, almost amazonian, frontwoman, every bit as visually hypnotic and ther perfect opposite to Kirsty. These days you sometimes think that the record companies want visual more than musical - well, in this band, they've got their dreams come true.
Soooooooo......... what about the set? Well, although at the end, the band said they could have done better, bearing in mind I;d not seen them for a while, to me, this was a rip-roaring set. You had everything from ska to almost hip hop to punk and all points in between. Calum on sax was seen moving around and skanking over his corner of the stage with a grin on his face, while event the giant of a bass guitarist was seen to move around a bit, too, while Peg remained stoic and on top of it all, stage right. Somje of the songs seemed to go a breakneck speed - which was presumably what the band was referring to at the end - but the sheer energy and fire that songs such as "Bedrock", "Beanie Boy", "Scenester" and the ultimate crowd-pleaser "Deceiter" exuded, was enough for you to be absolutely spellbound and unable to resist the urge to move. The singers each provided strong vocals and when the sang together or traded off each other, the timing and strength of the vocals was spot on.
When you think aboout how potentially good but incredibly lose, this bans was about 6 months or more ago, the change and progression is quite mind-boggling and the very fact that they're doing it all for fun and loving every minute of it, actually makes them more enjoyable to watch and even more likely to gain the atention of some label that knows their potential. For now, a band simply not to be missed, live in concert.
