ATTICA RAGE - In Concert With The Mirror CD-EP

Classic sounding metal from Glasgow band with a debut 5-tracker that oozes the best in Scottish metal. A dual-guitar quartet, they open with the title track where they add synthesizer for extra depth as the twin guitar produce smoking, steaming riffs while the rhythm section crunches and drives to intense degree. The lead vocals are in Classic Rock vein and the whole thing comes across with a feel of something between Rainbow and Lone Star. "Walk Away" storms into life with a roaring sea of scything electric guitar riffing as the synth sways from side to side, the rhythm section thunders and the solid lead vocal cuts its path through as ther guitars light the way. An anthemic harmony-laden chorus adds the icing on the cake as the slowly thundering song reveals something that's a mix of '90's Metallica and something more harmonically Gothic. Slightly less than four minutes of "Contradictions" drops the synths and distills the approach into one of a chugging, monstrous metal juggernaut as the guitar lay waste to all that surrounds, the rhythm section providing a massive sounding dynamic backdrop, with initially low-down vocals that soar on the choruses, while this flaming set of muscular guitar riffs carves its way into your skull, the whole song a lumbering demon of a track that really brings the metal monster out in you. "Don't Lie To Me" starts with floating synths to which is added shimmering guitar and deep bass as the drums slowly enter and a more metal-ballad styled song begins. But then it erupts into life as the intensity and density change shape of the song thanks to a surging wave of guitar chords and solid rhythm work. That the song veers between the two styles with comeplete success makes this one of the finest metal ballads around today, the addition of a high-flying guitar lead amid the rolling riffing, just the icing on an already sumptuous cake. Finishing with "Back To The Old School", it does what it says on the tin, and provides this rolling monster of Classic Rock metal mayhem complete with driving guitar riffs, rhythm work that thunders like a train and vocals that soar through the verses in dramatic rock manner. Overall, fantastic stuff from a Classic Metal band who really should be a lot bigger than they are right now. On this evidence, their time will come and not before too long, either.
