SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

THE BLACK LIGHTS - Queen Of The USA CD-EP

Seen for the first time and seriously impressive, myself and Marina Mermaid really rated this band so much that we immediately offered them another gig on the strength of what we witnessed. This demo CD was recorded quite a while ago and clearly illustrates the potential of the band, something that, a year and a half down the line, is really starting to blossom. The band themselves play straight-down-the-line, no-frills Classic Rock, heavy metal with melody, rock with muscle and the necessary strength and cohesion to make it memorable and enjoyable. The opening couple of tracks illustrate this, albeit slightly more demo-y in comparison with their current sound, but it's still two cracking examples of adrenaline-rousing rock with sizzling guitar leads, driving rock rhythms and a vocalist who really belts it out but sung rather than hollered. They're the sort of tracks which make you not only want to hear more, but actually go out and witness the live band for yourself. On the third track, the vocals are a bit too upfront but the effect is still one of rousing rock thunder as the band strikes out below the surge of lead vocals and harmonies, the appearance of an electrifying lead break above the clattering rhythm section, merely adding to the effect, still a good track all the same, and even a hook there to keep it memorable for ages after. Finally, you get “Ready To Run”, a commanding piece riding on super-fast Bo Diddley roots, before the lead vocal dissipates into duelling twin vocalising as this surge of blistering guitar riffing comes in and the vocals are injected with extra angst as it all drives forward then..........well, actually I've no idea, as my CDR refused to play beyond this point!! But, that aside, it's hot stuff from an up and coming rock band that you really must witness in concert.
