DIRTY WEE MIDDENS - The Embarassing Wood E.P.

While this is not so much "demo quality" as just buzz-saw raw with a rough edge so sharp it could cut clean through you, what it does do, if you turn the volume way up (someone didn't record this loud enough), is show that this band is pretty darned unique in the world of Dundee punk. Their influences may seem to be more seventies punk and eighties goth-punk-horror, but there's also a seam of seventies CBGB's era bands there too, as well as hints of early Stooges and more. All this stuck in one whacking great melting pot produces a result that, while right now, it only hints at the awesome power that this band can unleash in concert, it nevertheless reveals that this lot are certainly kings of raging sleaze-punk right now. So, what do we get? 7 tracks in just over 13 minutes, including three covers (well, two and a half anyway - that I know - there may be more!!). Opens with "Welcome To Zombietown" and immediately this thunderous buzz-saw guitar and pounding bass riff, combined with drums that sound like they were recorded in a shed several yards down the road, rumble away over this soaring guitar while the star is Lee's vocal that just roars and hollers. Next up is "Land Of The Dead" which positively rages along and it's a shame here that the volume is so low coz this one needs to be heard at ear bleeding levels, this and the next track "Bring Back The Anarchy" just speeding along on this wild ride of punk-rock blitz as the band spit out chords like napalm fire and Lee lets rip with some wild vocal on top. Their antidote to "Teemage Kicks" in the form of "Suck My Dick" (use yer imagination!!) follows the trail of the original while getting down and dirty in the best sleaze traditions - sex and punk in perfect harmony. "Embarassing Wood" is a storm-force rollercoaster ride through a seriously fast sea of riffing, an actual hook-laden chorus that will be in your head for ages after and another hi-octane, adrenaline-rousing vocal from Lee. They cover Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop", make it sound fine (although right now, live, they make this version sound like a walk in the park) but as a track on here, it fits the mood and pace of the whole thing. Finally there's the cover of "Monster Mash" that really blares out at you with its 100 mile an hour riffing, urgent, hollered vocals and the band sounding like they're on fire but about to fall apart at the same time. Stunner!
Overall, then, this is definitely a "demo" - you have to experience it at a volume that, for other CD's, would be positively painful - but what it does do is convey the fun and humour that this band exudes by the truckload while at the same time showing that they are a force to be reckoned with as regards having that important ingredient that will, one day, get them recognised above many others in their arena. A decent start, but the best is decidedly yet to come.
