SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!

THE DRAYMIN - 2Point1 CD-EP

They're back – the best thing to come out of Rosyth since the Euro-ferry – in fact, the best thing to come out of Rosyth, period!! Back in a big way, too, as they've just unleashed a brand new 4-track CD which is absolutely superb. Things start with “Love Will See You Through” which shows the band off for the band you know and loved, as well as showing the band off for a whole new modern style. Initially, the song swings, starting with shimmering guitars chords, Pink Floyd “Let There Be More Light” styled bass, before a crash of guitar and driving drums herald the arrival of the vocals which sing the verse at mid-pace without any break for breath, as all around the rhythms cascade, the guitars shine and sparkle and the whole song just cruises effortlessly along with the depth of vocals quite wondrous. Then it all decelerates only for the staccato guitars to drive forward in a hail of riffs as the now fast-paced instrumental break echoes the past and the band spiral upwards on swirls of riffs and rhythms, as a soaring lead guitar spins out of the ether and the whole thing takes off, the vocals now anguished and just like the Draymin of old, towering above the instrumental strength as the whole song goes into orbit and ends – quite stunning. “You Bring The Fire” adds synth to the solid rhythms and chiming guitars as a stunning slice of emotive, driving Draymin songwriting provides a solid verse and a multi-tracked chorus with spirited emotion and the whole thing taking you along with it in a blaze of glory as verses and chorus intertwine to amazing degree, a song worthy of the finest Draymin of old, twisting and turning but always on course with a solid sound, spiraling guitars and emotive vocals. “All Regrets” starts a tad slower, still that Waters-like bass booming out, but then it settles down into soaring synth backdrop as the vocals once again gather an emotional storm, full of feeling as the bass is upfront, the drums come up from behind, the synth fills out the sound and the guitars riff almost imperceptibly as the backing texture. The vocals is taut, anguished and impassioned, as the harmonies appear and what is a giant of a song once more takes off to the skies. A guitar break spirals upwards as the song drives ahead, then the vocal returns for the verse-as-hook and it all stays with you as one of the finest slices of commercial indie that you'll hear and such a glorious song, you just want to play it and play it. The EP ends with a dance mix of “Life Is A Debut” where The Draymin meet techno head on and the result is astoundingly good as the familiar howl of the passionate vocal roars across a solid wave of synths and programmed rhythms, backed up by deep throbbing bass, the song taking off as you'd expect. The thing about The Draymin is the absolute sheer force of passion that the vocalist exudes into every song, so much so, that you are inexorably carried along in the songs' wake, the band providing a dynamic, driving set of riffs, rhythms and leads into songs that could only be one band, all of which you can enjoy time after time, and yet all of which are incredibly instantly accessible at the same time. A great band and a stunning CD.
