MODUS - SOUNDS FROM THE KITTEN CASINO

It's surprising enough that this band from Edinburgh have produced an immaculately sounding and produced album that conjures the sound of the sixties to perfection. What is even more surprising, especial;ly to someone like me who's never been the greatest fan of sixties styled music, is just how well it works and how enjoyable album it became once I'd plucked up the courage to dive into it. On first hearing I listened to half of the album's ten tracks with wrapt attention, just enjoying it all. So, what's the band all about - well, there are five of them - four instrumentalists on guitar, bass, drums and Hammond organ/pianos, all of whom who provide this strident mix of driving sixties briloiance, that comes across a bit like a 21st century Spencer Davis Group on occasion, but manages by and large, to retain its own identity while wearing its stylistic influences firmly on its collective sleeves. But, the secret weapon, and absolute star of the whole thing, is lead vocalist, Miss Modus, who procceds to deliver a consistent series of strong and emotive vocals across every one of the ten tracks. From ballads to rockers, she soars and flies, glides and croons through every song, with a power and purity of vocal that it's impossible not to get caught up in its drive and determination. Even though it's sixties styled, there's an inner strength of playing and structure of arrangement that manages to avoid all the cliches and come up with song after glorious song that would delight anyone into everything from modern indie lounge music to out and out sixtie revivalism. In an album where there's nothing less than a consistent song on the whole thing, you don't single out individual tracks - you play the whole thing from start to finish, frugging and jiving to every gold-tiped minute, loving its familiarity, admiring its originality and in awe of its execution, while falling firmly under the spell of a female lead vocal that provides the endles waves of solid pleasure which sum up her immaculate vocal performance. Produced, arranged and played to the best quality, this is an album to treasure, to play long, loud and often.
