PAGE 6: Live E.P.
To give you a lasting flavour of the excitement of the new, revitalised Page 6 in concert, and as a material taster for the forthcoming studio album, they've put together three of their concert faves, recorded live at The Doghouse in Dundee, onto CDR and are giving them away free at gigs if you're lucky enough to get one. Although slightly bootleggy in nature, the recordings are still remarkably clear and genuinely reveal the best facets of this band and just how exciting they are live. Opening with the energy rush that is "Dancing Boy", the band immediately launch into this wild slice of dancefloor funk-rock as the bass thunders, the drums drive forth and the vocals soar, the song immediately addictive at the same time as being urgent and electrifying, with a suitably catchy chorus. But if that is catchy, then the next track, "Why Would You Fancy A Drunk Man?" is positively contagious, as this massive sounding, wickedly funky bass line leads the way as the drums crunch and thrash, and the clipped guitar leads all combine to take the track through its myriad twists and turns, the energy levels even higher, the urge to dance totally irresistible, while at the same time being a song where the frantic vocal still manages to deliver the goods complete with another addictive chorus, as the song rises and falls while maintaining its electrifying levels of adrenaline rush, throughout. As with the opener, the vocals are clear and upfront, superbly sung and totally in keeping with the power and tension that the tracks elicit. Finally, there's "What's Wrong With Us?", the third in the trilogy of their more urgent numbers, led by an undulating bass, crunchy fast drums, gently flowing guitar chords and a vocal that soars through urgency followed by chilled-out bliss for the chorus, as the band reaches the base, then thunders back up the ladder for the verses. Quality-wise, it's not meant for consumerised mass consumption, although, to be honest, I've heard things wayyyyyy worse than this for which you had to pay good money. But what this does achieve - and how! - is illustrating just how good this band's tracks are and how much of an exciting force they are to be reckoned with when it comes to live magic and the funkiest indie band in Dundee. Superb, and I can't wait for the real thing!!
