PLAYTONE - ROUND AT MY PLACE CD-EP

A Glaswegian quartet that I first saw, as much by accident as anything, supporting the mighty Draymin at Dundee's Doghouse, but I'm sure as hell glad to have caught them, because the live set was exciting, and this debut CD is just superb!!
A quartet with two electric guitars and rhythm section, as well as lead and harmony vocals, the first thing you notice is the sheer overall quality of it all - production, writing, arranging, singing, playing - it's all there by the truckload, as three glorious tracks come to life. The band play a kind of driving but not hard rocking brew that mixes Americana styled songs with UK contemporary indie strength, the result being a trio of compositions that you'll want to play over and over again. The CD opens with the title track that starts on a meaty ringing guitar riff, with flowing strong vocal above the washes of rhythm section, before the vocal ups the anti and takes things onto a more emotive level, only for the accompaniment to fire up alongside. As the new found strident path drops back to allow the vocals to return to the more atmospheric verses, the whole thing gradually flows before rising up to the choruses once more, to dramatic effect. The way the song then proceeds to build and spiral upwards with a gloriously strong lead guitar break paving the way, and the way the song twists and turns but never loses sight of its aim and feel, is a testament to the stunning writing and arranging qualities that this band possesses. Through verses, choruses and solos, this is nothing short of magical and a song that demands repeat playing. "Blues Star" opens with a more aggressive riff before slowing to reveal the lead vocal over chiming guitar backdrops and solid flowing drum work as the ripples of rhythm guitar, harmony vocals and deep bass provide the icing on the cake. The vocal climbs ever upwards as the yearning vocals sail away only for the crashing opening riff to enter once more, albeit briefly, and we're back into another verse. The way this all sounds so natural while at the same time taking all manner of turns along its way, is what keeps you hooked and makes you want more. The vocals are just splendid with a singer who fits the songs like a glove, giving an impassioned performance throughout, while the guitarists show the necessary mix of power and restraint with ease and effectiveness, on a song that simply shines out of the speakers, builds, fires up and surges into your head to stunning degree. Finally, "Turn The World Around" opens with jaunty solid riffing and rhythm work before, once again, that is toned down for the opening verse, only to re-enter for the chorus-as-hook parts of the song, this ebbing and flowing continuing to excellent effect, as another great song unfolds. Overall, this is quality stuff that is head and shoulders above many more well known bands in this musical arena, it demands to be heard and I can't wait for an album!!
