TEMPERCALM - TRUE NOVELLA CD

Jeezussssssssss!!!! The age of the power trio is not dead as this band from Scotland clearly testifies. But it's not yer standard metal power trio - oh no - this is a mighty beast of a machine that roars into life and manages to combine indie and rock in such a tightly knit, cohesive, surge of a sound that, right from the supercharged anthem that is "Vanity", with its fiery shuddering rhythms and red hot guitar work - and incidentally sounding a dead ringer for Dundee's Rebelhearts - and soaring vocal leads and harmonies, immediately lets you know you're in the presence of greatness. A Glaswegian band - yet another amazing Glaswegian band - they provide a mighty blast of indie-rock strength that displays a sueprb sense of dynamics in addition to the directness and creativity of the arrangements, a song such as "Something In Spanish" showcasing this facet of their performance to a tee, the mix of light and shade, knowing when to drop it all down for maximum effect so that when it erupts once again, the explosion burns even brighter, When they do let go, the rhythm section really cuts loose and this sea of infectious playing has you invariably headbanging along with it. "Big Huff" is even more of a huge-sounding hardrock anthem wraped up in a magical and multi-layered indie disguise, as a high-flying song is heard on top of this cauldron of metal guitar riffing, while the whole soundscape is filled with the wall-to-wall instrumentation as the vocals climb ever higher and veer between impassioned lead voice to gloriously uplifting mumti-part harmonies, complete with addictive hooks along the way, as stirring a track as they come, and guaranteeed to get the pulse racing. "Marc Temple" provides a respite from the power as it begins with a ballad but this atmosphere slolwy changes until the storm clouds gather and you're in the prsence of this wondrous hail of guitars, bass and drums which all gather pace and intensity to provide a truly awee-inspiring piece of music as the vocal continue to delight and the song becomes yet another memorable gen of a number. In solid, consistent, cohesive and totally satisfying manner, the other 8 tracks on this 12 track album, all follow similar pathways, twisting and turning along the way, but always providing a metallic roar to its satisfying indie songwriting, and with a universal apeal to both sides of the rock fence, as the tracks speak for themselves, but the playing from the band, the stunning vocals from guitarist James Mackenzie, the tightness of Dave Rundeell on drums and Andy Haughton on bass, plus the jaw-droping excellence of songwriting and arranging, with a sound as vast as the Grand Canyon and the potential to boot, all make this an absolutely faultless gem of an album.
