THULA BORAH - Demo 2009 CD-EP

Glasgow-based band whose demo tells you right away that this band are fantastic at composing tracks which exude the sort of haunting, hypnotic, exotic and feel-good atmosphere that you get from the more “shoegazing” type of bands and a band such as Sigur Ros. The opener, “Shimmer” is ample evidence of this, as its mix of high register one-chord guitar stream allied to tasty acoustic guitar work, steady rhythms and lightly echoed lead and harmony vocals, plus a real musical depth to it all, adds up to a curiously haunting and highly emotive song. It does go on too long with its hook towards the end and while the scenery changes in the background, the vocal repetition does not, although its feel outweighs its repetition, and you are left with the feel of wanting to hear its exotic charms once more. “Dirty Injection” does what it says – a dirty, buzz-saw of a guitar riff opens things with stomping rhythm section, ringing lead guitars and, finally, multi-part lead vocals, to provide a song that's hard at one end, remarkably textural at the other, and, while this time the negative is the unchanging nature of the rhythm section, the plus points are that the bass as lead wanders all round as the river of guitars winds it way under the purposeful harmony vocals. When, unexpectedly, it drops back to a mid-section of acoustic guitar beauty and chiming lead guitars set against a rhythm that marches on and then a guitar intensity that takes you to the climax of the song, the whole then becomes greater than the sum of the parts and a fine track is the result. The final track, “Standing In Your Sun”, lasts nearly seven minutes, opens with more deep bass, ringing lead guitars, steady drums, an almost electronic hissing depth to it that gives the song an extra edge, while the harmonious lead vocals fly effortlessly on top of the strong backdrop that strides slowly on, another gem of atmosphere, structure and texture that really has you hooked, despite the lack of any hooks – this is music that you feel and makes you feel good. The song veers between the mulit-layered instrumental exoticism and chiming guitar peals, and the airy but purposeful and strong vocals with an emotion that's highly engaging and really makes you just want to sit back and listen to the thing. The production on this one's a bit raw at times, but this is more than made up for by the extraordinarily good arrangement. Overall, a band that's seriously promising and deserves to be heard by many – can't wait to see what happens next.........
