TURNING THIRTEEN - String She Pulled CD-EP

Debut single from Aberdeen's indie powerhouse Turning Thirteen. The title track is unusual in the way it works as it has this massive buzz-saw guitar riff lurching back and forth as the song rolls forward, propelled by the equally sawing motion strength of the rhythm section. The bass thunders underneath as the lead singer reveals a voice full of emotion and tension, soaring above the see-saw riffing, with bursts of harmonies on what doesn't exactly amount to a hook or a chorus but serves equally well as a dynamic contrast from the high-flying angst of the verses. The rhythms lurch and crunch, the guitars swirl and burn, the thick riffs threaten a searing heat lead that never happens, as the whole song surges ahead to great effect. “Diary Of A Superfluous Man” blazes into action this time as a much faster sea of guitar riffing ensues only to drop right back leaving the pounding bass and driving drums over which a more relaxed vocal emerges, but then the whole lot erupt as the vocals holler, then to drop back again. This dynamic arrangement serves to provide a neat contrast between the verses and what effectively amount to a chorus, albeit one of the most powerful yet hard-to-remember varieties. It's powerful stuff. “Baby Puzzles” opesn slowly with ringing guitar as the drums crunch in slowly, and a relaxed sea of vocals emerges. Gradually, you feel the tension rise, although it initially reverts back to its relaxed, lazy but taut opening. Shortly, amid a burst of fiercely slow guitar riffing and crunching rhythms, the vocal harmonies rise higher, but the track refuses to erupt, instead dropping back once more. Eventually, ther guns do begin to blaze but in a much more controlled way than you'd expect, indicating the breadt and quality of writing and arranging that this band possesses. Finally, the song goes into a barrage of guitars as it does truly ignite above the solidly lurching rhythm section and the song is seen out in a hail of guitars. Recommended!!
