Unit 8/1 Smart Talking Baby

Aim:

To introduce students to the investigation of a baby's pronunciation of English consonants.

Method:

Transcripts of extracts from a recording of a 2-year-old's attempts to recite well-known English nursery rhymes are compared with adult pronunciation. Particular attention is paid to the nature of the differences between the two pronunciations.

Aim:

To introduce students to the investigation of the meanings that children can and cannot convey in their talk

Method:

Transcripts of children's "errors" are described to show how a child makes use of its limited language resources in attempting to communicate with others.
