Unit 6/1 Prescriptive & descriptive attitudes to language use -1

Aim:

To make a critical study of some of the traditional "rules" of English grammar and to assess the validity of prescriptive and descriptive attitudes to English usage.

Method:

As an example, the "rule" of avoiding a split infinitive is examined for its linguistic acceptability. Empirical evidence of problems which arise if the "rule" is applied is discussed.
Practical Activities are based upon a series of Letters to the Editor in a daily newspaper.

Unit 6/2 Prescriptive & descriptive attitudes to language use - 2

Aim:

(i) To continue the study of people's "pet hates" in language use from the series of Letters to the Editor, begun in Unit 6/1.
(ii) To encourage independence of thought when discussing and assess-ing claims about correct usage.

Method:

As before, the approach is empirical, putting into descriptive terms the miscellaneous and varied features of language use raised by the letter writers, and suggesting Activities which will encourage students to consider for themselves the validity of the issues.
