The Brighton connection (post 1820s)
Henry Robert BARTON (1880-1958) was my grandfather.
He married Edith Emily FOGDEN at the Register Office in Steyning on 27th October 1900. They married at the Register Office because Edith was pregnant with their first child but why Steyning? This was a small market town about 8 miles NW of Brighton (where they both lived).
Henry was a labourer all his life, eventually working for Brighton Corporation. In the First World War he was a cook and looked after horses. Nevertheless he was wounded when in France. While he survived this war his wife, Edith, was killed in the Second World War. On 14th September 1940 she was in the Odeon cinema in Kemp Town, Brighton, when it was badly damaged by a German air raid at 3.30 pm. She was one of 2 adults and 4 children who were killed. Twenty others were injured.
