| My FOGDENs |
The Brighton connection (post the early 1800s)
Edmund FOGDEN (1792-1871) was my great-great-great-grandfather.
Edmund was a labourer all his life. He married a widow, Sarah FEIST (nee COALSTICK) on 10th April 1826 at Brighton. Sarah had married John FEIST at Brighton in 1809 and they had at least 2 children (Sarah & Phoenix) before he died in 1821 in his early 30s. I do not know what happened to their children. Please note that both COALSTICK & FEIST are names that have many spelling variations! Both he and Sarah ended their days in the Brighton Workhouse. He was 79 and she was about 82 - very good ages for those days.
Sarah was in her late 30s when she married Edmund and they had 4 children (one of whom before they got married):
| George FOGDEN (1825-?) |
George was baptised on 28th March 1825 at Brighton. I know nothing more about him. |
| Edward FOGDEN (1827-1828) |
Edward was baptised on 4th March 1827 at Brighton. He died as a young child a year or so later. |
| Henry FOGDEN (c1828-1917) |
Henry was born c 1828. He firstly married Caroline BROCKHURST on 14th March 1854. She died in 1858 and he then married Nancy RUSSELL on 16th February 1861. She died in 1877. Both marriages took place at Brighton. He had 2 children by Caroline and 4 by Nancy. Henry outlived his wives by 40 years - he died in 1917 at Lewes. He was a labourer all his life. |
| Edmund FOGDEN (1829-1918) |
Edmund was my great-great-grandfather. He was baptised on the 10th May 1829 at Brighton. |
