| My FOGDENs |
The Brighton connection (post the early 1800s)
William Edward FOGDEN (1854-1932) was my great-grandfather.
He was a labourer who married Sarah Ann OLDING on 22nd December 1878 at Brighton. Sarah Ann was Lucy's sister so Lucy became her sister's step-mother! Lucy and Sarah Ann were born at Berkley in Somerset, 2 of 9 children to John OLDING & Sarah SLADE. Were they attracted to Brighton by its growing fame? Had they had enough of the country life in Somerset? Had there been a family quarrel? I will never know but come to Brighton they did and there they married father and son. Both William & Sarah were members of the Salvation Army. William carried the flag. I have been unable to find out when they joined or if any of their children followed in their footsteps.
The family of William Edward FOGDEN & Sarah Ann OLDING:
| Edith Emily FOGDEN (1879-1940) |
Edith Emily was my grandmother which is where the Fogdens come into my ancestry. She was born on 29th June 1879 at Brighton. She died on 14th September 1940 when the Odeon cinema in Kemp Town, Brighton, was badly damaged by a German air raid at 3.30 pm. She was one of 2 adults and 4 children who were killed. Twenty others were injured. |

| Ernest Henry FOGDEN (1889-1961) |
