My FOGDENs

The Donnington connection (post 1750s)

Apart from a couple of earlier marriages Fogdens first appear in the Donnington registers in 1751 with the baptism of John FOGDEN, the fifth and final child of Henry & Jane FOGDENInterestingly (?) the Bishop’s Transcript has this event happening exactly one year earlier with the mother named Jean – the date may or may not have been correct but the mother’s christian name certainly was not.

Where did these Fogdens come from?  Well, around 1750, three Fogden brothers moved to Donnington from Boxgrove (which was then the Fogden heartland, 5 miles away to the NE).  They were William, Henry & Robert, three of the sons of Thomas & Mary FOGDEN. Henry & Robert were both yeoman farmers.  I am not sure if William migrated at the same time as his brothers or followed them after all his children had grown up.  All the many later Fogdens at Donnington in the Parish Registers descend from Henry (my 5xgreat-grandfather) and his brother Robert.  By 1800 these two had been the cause (either directly or indirectly!) of 42 baptisms and 12 marriages at Donnington.

What follows are the details of the families of these three brothers.

William FOGDEN (1701-1767)

Henry FOGDEN (1709-1794)

Robert FOGDEN (1712-1766)
