| My FOGDENs |
The Donnington connection (post 1750s)
Henry FOGDEN (1709-1794), my 5xgreat-grandfather, married Jane MEARS (?-1770) at the Palace Chapel, Chichester, on 8th November 1736. This is their family:
| Thomas FOGDEN (1737-1806) |
Thomas was baptised on 30th August 1737 at Boxgrove. He married Elizabeth MOUNTFIELD on 15th November 1758 at Donnington. They had 11 children. He was the Parish Clerk of Donnington but, as yet, I do not know when. Thomas was buried at Donnington in 1806, 29 years after that of his wife (who was only 42). |
| Anne FOGDEN (1739-?) |
Anne was baptised on 27th March 1739 at Boxgrove. She married Joseph HARRIS, a farmer at Donnington, on 23rd June 1768 at Donnington. |
| Henry FOGDEN (1741-1820) |
Henry was my 4xgreat-grandfather. He was baptised on 22rd May 1741 at Selsey (a coastal village to the south-east of Donnington). Firstly he married Mary SEARLE on 30th June 1772 at Donnington. According to the Donnington BTs they had a daughter, Charlotte, in 1774. However the Parish Register has Charlotte being born to Thomas & Elizabeth FOGDEN, only to die 4 months later. They might have had a second daughter, Eliza, as she was mentioned in Henry's will but so far no baptism has been found for her. Then Mary died in 1780 only 8 years after they married. Henry remarried two years later on 28th November 1782 to Susan(na) HAMMOND who was 20 years younger than him. They married at Amberley but settled in Donnington where Henry was a yeoman farmer. They had 9 children, all but George (the last born) and Maria were baptised at Donnington. After George's birth the family moved to Brighton where they started the Brighton connection. |
| Mary FOGDEN (1742/3-?) |
Mary was baptised on 20th January 1742/43 at Selsey. I know nothing more about her. |
| John FOGDEN (1751-?) |
John was baptised on 25th April 1751 at Donnington. He married Ann BUDD on 15th November 1785 at West Dean. They had 6 children, all of whom were baptised at Donnington. |
Henry was buried at Donnington in 1794, 24 years after that of his wife.
