My FOGDENs

Before Boxgrove (pre 1680s)

I am reasonably confident that my Fogdens go back to a John FOGDEN (who would be my 9xgreat-grandfather if I am correct) who married Elizabeth WILLERDE on 19th November 1604 at Boxgrove.  This may have been John’s second marriage as a John Fogden married Margery MYLES on 8th October 1598 at Oving (a village just to the south of Boxgrove).  There do not appear to be any children of this union after 1602.  A fellow Fogden researcher has suggested that we go back to an Edward FOGDEN (son of Richard?) who was born at Fittleworth in 1496 but I have not yet followed this through.   Fittleworth (a village 10 miles to the north-east of Boxgrove and Tangmere) was certainly another Fogden enclave in this western corner of Sussex.

This is the known (?) family of John FOGDEN & Margery MYLES:

John FOGDEN
(1598-?)
No details are known about John apart from his birth in 1598.
? FOGDEN
(1601-1601)
No details are known about this child who died as a baby.
? FOGDEN
(1602-1602)
No details are known about this child who died as a baby.

On the assumption that this John FOGDEN is the same as the one who married Elizabeth WILLERDE then Margery must have died between 1602 and 1604.  I have not verified this yet.

This is the known family of John FOGDEN & Elizabeth WILLERDE:

Elizabeth FOGDEN
(1605-?)
Elizabeth was baptised on 21st November 1605 at Tangmere.  An Elizabeth FOGDEN married Mathew KING at Donnington in 1641 but I do not know if this is the same Elizabeth.
William FOGDEN
(1609-?)
William was baptised on 1st April 1609 at Tangmere.  A William FOGDEN married Margrett MILES at Fittleworth in 1640 but I do not know if this is the same William.
John FOGDEN
(1613-?)
John was my 8xgreat-grandfather.  He was baptised on 2nd November 1613 at Tangmere.

I am as certain as can be that John died in 1639.  He made a "Nuncupative" will (ie made by word of mouth in the presence of witnesses) in which there are bequests to his wife, Elizabeth, and two sons, William & John.  John was described as a weaver of Tangmere.

John FOGDEN married Judith COMPTON on 21st July 1640 at Tangmere.  This is their family:

Susan FOGDEN
(1641-?)
Susan was baptised on 18th November 1641 at Tangmere.  I know nothing more about her.
John FOGDEN
(1644-?)
John was baptised on 11th December 1644 at Tangmere.  A John FOGDEN married Mary SMART at Petworth in 1670 but I do not know if this is the same John.
Thomas FOGDEN
(1648-?)
Thomas was baptised on 26th April 1648 at Tangmere.  I know nothing more about him.
William FOGDEN
(1650-1708)
William was my 7xgreat-grandfather.  He was baptised on 14th February 1650 at Tangmere.  The Boxgrove connection began when William and his family moved there between 1679 and 1683
Robert FOGDEN
(1652/3-?)
Robert was baptised on 24th March 1652/3 at Tangmere.  He married Jane HOLLIS on 1st October 1674 at Pagham (a coastal village less than 6 miles south of Tangmere).
Elizabeth FOGDEN
(1655-?)
Elizabeth was baptised on 17th January 1655 at Tangmere.  She married either Thomas GOFFE (on 27th November 1676 at Aldingbourne) or Edmund/Edward TUPPER (on 1st February 1680 at Oving).  Both Aldingbourne and Oving are only a mile or so from Tangmere.
