| My FOGDENs |
Fogdens who emigrated
Fogdens can now be found in countries as far afield as Australia, Canada & New Zealand. Here are the brief details of three of my distantly related Fogdens who started new lives in these countries:
| Charles FOGDEN (1810-1856) |
Charles FOGDEN was a great-grandson of Robert FOGDEN, one of the brothers who founded the Donnington branch of my Fogdens. He was born at Donnington in 1810. He was a carpenter and married Sophia SLATER at Petworth, Sussex, in 1834. By the time he decided to emigrate to Australia in 1838 he had two young children Sophia & Mary Emma. Unfortunately Mary Emma died on the voyage to Australia. The family settled in South Australia and Charles & Sophia had another seven children. | William Francis FOGDEN (1828-?) |
William Francis
FOGDEN was a great-great-grandson of Henry
FOGDEN, one of the brothers who founded the Donnington branch
of my Fogdens. He was born at Portsea, Hampshire, in 1828. He
left England with his father, Thomas FOGDEN, and his sisters Emma
& Lavinia on the Ganges bound for Victoria, Australia, where
they arrived in June 1853. Eventually he sailed to New Zealand where
he married Sophia Julie FURLEY at Dunedin in 1867.
They had seven children.
I do not know what happened to his father and Lavinia. It appears that Emma returned to England and married Charles GARDNER at Portsea, Hampshire, in 1866. There was another brother, Thomas James Guscott FOGDEN, who had married Louisa WOODFORD at Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1852. He did not emigrate, nor did his other sister, Mary Ann, named after her mother Mary Ann FOGDEN (nee GUSCOTT). Had their mother died leaving Thomas a widower? |
| Percy William FOGDEN (1874-1947) |
Percy William FOGDEN was a great-great-great-grandson of Henry FOGDEN, one of the brothers who founded the Donnington dynasty. He was born at Southampton, Hampshire, in 1874. He met Ellen QUIRKE after he arrived in New Zealand and married her at Gisborne, Poverty Bay, in 1902. They had two children. As can be seen from the above all these emigrant Fogdens, and myself, descend from Thomas & Mary FOGDEN who married at Chichester in 1700.
