Canoeing |

This year we where determined to go canoeing. The troop canoes and trailor had been unused for two years and required checks and repair. After a lot of hard work an evening was chosen Specialist help from highly qualified canoeing instructors was added to the leaders and a marvelous time was had by all. Unfortunately no pictures where taken on that occasion. Later in the year a second troop night session was set up. Seventeen scouts went on the river Derwent 3 miles North of Derby. Again we had the support of a number of very highly qualified trainers. The scouts enjoyed instruction in technique and had fun changing canoes walking along the raft. Have a look at the pictures below. |

Andy, Claire, Alex, and myself competed in the annual David lee Memorial canoe race on the river Dove near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Out of a field of 30 scout competitors Andy was the overall 5th quickest in the scout category with a time of 28 minutes 28 seconds, that compares with first place time of 24 minutes dead. Alex managed a time of 30 minutes 15 seconds and came in 8th place. Claire came in 10th position her time was 30 minutes 48 seconds. The winners of the Spitfire Trophy (donated by our troop) was the 63rd Derby. The best three scores from each troop are averaged. We came a close second this year. Next year we may win it! Yours truly, in the open class managed the 5 mile course in 54 minutes 12 seconds 21st place in a field of 44 and crossed the finish line upside down! Room for improvement there. |
